  5.  @phillip0537  IJN subs were directed largely against warships. There was little consideration of patrolling shipping lanes. The other “major” navies were more balanced, with Kriegsmarine probably the most “anti-merchant” and RN and USN being “if it floats and has wrong flag, sink it.”

  7.  @zstewart  Where are they mounted? On the topside of the hull? When launched their empty spots would cause issues with hydro acoustics, making the boat noiser. A positively buoyant “thing” detached from a sub that is, say, 300ft below the surface will not follow anything like a straight line up from that sub. This would be like a gravity-reversed Plinko game.
