@Thespectaro The KM wanted the Scharnhorsts to join Rheinubung, but those two ships were stuck in Brest, repairing damage, and couldn’t make it out for the start of the operation. Tirpitz’s captain asked repeatedly for permission to join the operation but was denied because the ship had just commissioned and the crew were still completely green.

@themanformerlyknownascomme777 I don’t think any navy had a “standard ratio.” More of every type was always better, and if they had to send a force out but couldn’t field a “balanced” one, they sent an “unbalanced” one.

@sse_weston4138 Considering the performance of the Mk15, it likely would have not contributed much to battle performance, but might have provided more evidence to show the faults of the 14 and 15, potentially leading to earlier improvement to both, to the great benefit of the silent service.

@Crosshair84 One aspect was machinery. German marine turbine technology lagged most other major navies because, between 1918 and getting the Hippers and Scharnhorsts in the water, they really had no real world experience. As result, they didn’t adopt super-high pressure systems as early as others, meaning they needed more boiler volume / mass to achieve the same SHP. Also, they didn’t package machinery as efficiently, so engine spaces were larger than comparable ships. Another aspect is that their systems had extensive safety mechanisms that added weight, without really improving performance.
