  1. I counter that, had Japan focused only on attacking UK assets, and ignored (not attacked / provoked) USA, they might have been able to achieve all their goals against the UK. I don’t think the US would have declared war without being directly attacked, and UK could not have effectively resisted Japan alone / if Japan were not trying to fight a “two-direction” war. Had Japan focused on gaining full control of the western Pacific Rim, India and SE Asia (except for Philippines, USA had little direct presence throughout the region) they could then have developed the industrial resources they desired and been able to continue to expand and fuel their navy.

  3. I pointed that out. But had IJN focused entirely on eliminating the UK from the region, the value of the Philippines, alone in a completely IJN dominated region, as either defensive or stepping-off point would have been nearly zero.

  5. The RN would have been unable to combat the IJN, if USN had not already inflicted so much damage on IJN. Even after 1943, the RN presence in Pacific could not possibly have been greater than 2, maybe 3, KGV class, Repulse, and Vanguard as escorts for 4, maybe 6, proper fleet carriers. Nothing else RN had at that point was competitive.
