Hitler believed, and assured all the senior military command staff, that the Western Allies would not escalate to open war to save Poland, and if ever they did go to war it would not be until at least 1943. His calculation was based on western reactions to everything before August 1939, including Britain’s seeming desperation to appease him viz. the AngloGerman naval treaty and non reaction to the annexation of Austria. I guess he didn’t tell them, then, that all along he was intending to attack France as early as militarily feasible, certainly before late 1940. Bunch of murdering shitheads.
