  1. Barbette is the cylindrical structure that holds and protects the workings of the ammunition hoists. A turret is a single-piece cylinder holding the gun working area, with joined structure covering the guns, which all turns together. What we commonly call a “turret” is actually more properly a “gun house which sits atop a barbette and can rotate while the barbette remains stationary.”

  2. Had the KM scrapped all ships larger than cruiser it would have made very little difference. At that point they had only Tirpitz and Scharnhorst, along with two Panzerschiffe. Their fuel use was not so great that having it back would have made a meaningful difference for land forces - you cannot take fuel meant for a ship and just dump it into tanks. Scrapping the heavy ships would not mean “more UBoats” because you cannot transmute heavy armor plate etc. into U-hulls.
