14:45 I think even if Repulse had Renown-pattern AA it would not have saved Zed. Competent strike aircraft will always triumph over warships unprotected by their own fighter aircraft. The IJN strike forces at Coral Sea and Midway were much the same as they’d been against Zed, while USN had CAP and benefit of six months war learning, and still could not prevent losses.

Most cannon were not drilled from solid metal blanks. They were either cast to a sand mold, or built up from iron hoops and staves.

@AmosDohms No, I don’t think it would even have done that. Modernization wouldn’t have made Repulse any faster, and the evasive maneuvering both ships did, which prevented them making progress in a heading out of danger, would still have happened.

@AmosDohms But the IJN strike aircraft could have kept up the attack for much longer than it actually took for them to sink the ships. WW2 has several examples, from after December 1941, of ships which kept aircraft at bay until they ran out of ammunition, and then succumbed pretty quickly to aircraft making their runs without interference from AA. They could not have gotten fully away, out of airstrike range, before that happened to them.
