The New York was designed and built to compare equitably with, and be able to engage against, contemporary ships that were commonly considered “super-dreadnought,” eg Orion.
The Alaska was not designed and built to compare equitably with, and be able to engage against, contemporary ships that were commonly considered “battlecruisers,” eg Renown, Kongo.
They were designed and built to compare favorably with, and be able to engage in superior terms against, a new generation of cruiser that Japan was thought to be building.
