He made that point: some home owners do not want any delay between when their system turns on and when the inside ambient reaches set point. Some homeowners feel that if the system runs more than a few hours a day, “something is wrong” and they specifically tell their installer they want a system that makes the fastest increase from the lowest set point to the highest. As he demonstrated, this may not always be the best way to approach the issue. Any solution greater than the legitimate need will present a higher full lifecycle cost than the properly sized solution - like buying a F350 because you buy 40 bags of mulch each spring and a cord of firewood each winter. A transparent and conscientious installer will take the time to measure more than just (length times width times number of floors), and actually understand how the homeowner wants their home to feel. But it is hard to do this with every potential customer because many of them will not hire the transparent, conscientious installer, so even the right-minded installers focus on delivering quotes as quickly as possible to increase their booked jobs. And, yes, sometimes salespeople focus their efforts on systems etc. that bring them higher margins, manufacturer incentives etc. I never worked in HVAC but I did work for an international IT reseller, and some technology manufacturers went to great lengths to encourage us to present their stuff as the solution to every customer’s needs.

@BrickTamlandOfficial So the customer (homeowner) is wrong and at fault? Do HVAC companies have any responsibility to educate customers on “you actually really do not need 60K BTU, you would be fine with a system half as powerful and expensive?” If I go to a Ford dealer and say “sell me a F350 so I can bring home 40 bags of mulch each spring and a cord of firewood each winter,” am I the only one to blame for buying 5x more truck than I need?
