  1. Our prior two homes had forced air HVAC, and in winter the air got so dry I had nosebleeds about weekly, and everyone’s skin would crack and peel. We got one of the big console humidifiers, and I added a half teaspoon of water treatment every time I filled the tank, and replaced its wick every month. We ran it every winter from 2016 until 2023 and I never saw signs of hard water staining. Last winter we moved into a new home (our last move; when I leave here it will be feet first and my destination will be a box in the ground) and for the following month life was so turbulent that I didn’t get a chance to figure out where to put the humidifier. And when life slowed down enough that I could turn my attention to it, I realized none of us had been feeling the effects of super dry winter air. So I left the humidifier in the basement, and if we get through 2024-25 without needing it, I will sell it.
