The quest for autonomous cars is driven by a government/corporate consortium that wishes to helicopter-parent the entire population for 'enhanced road safety', and to reduce the amount of ownership of cars by the populace in order to fulfill the promise of Build Back Better: 'You will own nothing and you will be happy'.

  2.  @Dundoril  I guess you live in a country where it is faster to walk 500 km than to use a car. Somehow it's an absurd fetish to prefer a country where it's infrastructure is developed to such an extend that the car becomes the preferred mode of transportation for such a trip. Similarly, I find it remarkable that Build Back Better, whose slogan has rolled off the tongue of multiple western government leaders and been part of the backdrop of the Biden administration, is somehow still a conspiracy theory.
