  1. Dude I can’t stress this enough. If you can , and idk why you would, but somehow find a feral cat. A truly feral one. You’re gonna have to meet it slowly over a couple years haha you’ll never see it if it doesn’t want. Bribe it. Then watch it at night if it lets you stay in ear shot. My property had a litter of ferals born and over half a decade I’ve known them. I can watch them hunt in my yard when I check for coyotes they know they get an ultra safe risk free hunting session. They literally walk away from prey they catch too fast ALL the time. The youngest female can climb anything and catch anything. She catches field mouse for fun, drags them away without injuring them, bats them around with retracted claws, and then looks around at other shit too long before the mouse sprints off and she just kinda watches it as she see the last bit of it disappear. Thats exactly what the lion did. In that clip atleast if I had to guess. I think you’re correct regarding the mother substituting her instincts but as for not attacking prey outside of mother instincts, cats are still cats . Big or small they do the same shit.
