Why disparage the 12th army group when every scholar on the matter and even some surviving still attest to the intelligence failure and a total surprise the Germans had on allied forces. 42:25 not sure what John means by “we”. He of course was not involved. Not even sir Oliphant on the fusion side as much as the fission side. His work on fusion pushed along the work of Teller. Which matters bc it was portrayed here as people involved who regretted their decision yet Oliphant had a much more direct hand in the atomic bombs in WWII. This was his POV as someone who developed the understanding for the fusion that would later be weaponized

But they were competent in battle hence their victory on the nearby ridge. There was a wel documented gap in intelligence where allied command dropped the ball on assessing the German artillery and offensive power

While nuanced, it’s mission critical that is represented. It’s depicted as some secret but FDR was pursuing a rather overt and clear political strategy. While trying to outrun the Desert Fox, Gen Montgomery was fighting for Britain’s empire not republic, small “r”. They were fighting for colonial land that if lost didn’t threaten home land . They COULD chose financially stable grounds conceding this land but choosing to fight a war in Africa to further bolster the concept of Empire was not a worthy pursuit. This began to bankrupt Britain. Churchill wanted his cake and to eat it too. He was using the US as a blank check to pursue his own interest well beyond the preservation of his nation. Ultimately FDR was elected under the strict promise of war dovishness. Yet he took the massive gamble fighting congress to pass the 1941 Act in the first place. In American politics NOTHING gets done without legislature. Execution and appropriation of funds was at his peril while there’s was no pretense for US involvement having only just recovered from one of the worse financial collapses in human history. The mere fact Lend lease was passed then subsequently signed into law that very day is the very important act that seems to be diluted in this depiction. While I myself think history looks back on Winston favorably, his military strategy was selfish which in a way is understandable but Britain not so helpless as this video made them seem. They had options. And while FDR had the framework in place to support Britain , he was also following through on his commitment to help any alllied nation. Proven by his extension of 50 million in military aid to the USSR before they were even fully eligible. A time when their allegiance was highly highly question as the ultimate marriage of convenience

Christ this again 6:12 the only thing more generous than saying The Ho2299 was designed specifically for stealth is saying this was mentioned at all with good intentions in good faith. And o truly wish I knew what Dan actually believe having read it but also seen his commentary here atleast as a presenter which one must believe he wouldn’t endorse an idea he doesn’t buy into somewhat. There’s no chance IMO the calculation was that both sons MIGHT survive if the youngest is handed over. It’s simply that either one goes and they all live or they all die here and now. But if we say that then it seems to be counter to the narrative that it was simply a series of out of control events. While appreciate a contrarian narrative here, how it’s presented seems almost like as parody. Told in a straight way, it sounds so preposterous as I’m listening with a clear, open mind.
