Wel yeah he was held responsible. These weren’t acts of god.. the storm included. And if something like cave diving is so experimental and we’re using that as a defense, how does one justify feeling like they have the expertise to lead far less younger explorers? It reminds of that climbing incident , which you should take a look at if you haven’t by the way, near Germany around ww2 where the nazis used the whole incident for propaganda but a young teacher took a bunch of younger boys into a giant blizzard and they died tragically in the storm. It was avoidable and there were plenty of signs they shouldn’t continue. Not to mention he did abandon them. We don’t actually know if he would have succumbed. He was bigger and stronger. The better fit kids died trying to help and he didn’t bother by his own account. It was likely more prudent but it he unique aspect is they were HIS responsibility. This is where the idea of captains going down with their ship comes from. The ship is their responsibility overall. Which includes the people on board.. but ultimately it’s the ship. Or the incident we’ve seen many times where a pilot died from flash over or inhalation making sure everyone exited their plane and only then they would exit. They are your responsibility. And why people like Francesco Schettino aren’t considered heroes for prudently going to safety in the face of danger. Again it would be a different story if these weren’t kids under your umbrella and responsibility then I’d say yes exit and go get help . And while still a tough decision, you accepted that possibility the second you took control of their safety when you entered . Atleast drag one person to safety, try, just one.
