GD man you weren’t kidding. Arridy’s case in particular feels like a bad fiction writing. Obviously I know why you avoided telling ppl what happened to him that resulted in him being sent back to the Colorado state home from his short return to Pueblo - genuinely incomprehensible horrendous this guy had to endure in his short life. What’s even worse to top it all off, this incident was the sole and primary driver behind their ability to convict him but also execute him despite the fact they had that other suspect with physical evidence. The State’s idiocy (or corruption… likely both) knew no bounds. initially his sanity trial deemed him “sane” and capable of giving clear testimony despite the fact he had absolutely zero clue what was going on. It took his lawyer that entire year to reverse the decision and get a second trial which you accurately portrayed. I can’t even imagine. The background as to motivations from the impossibly incompetent sheriff was his reported thirst for fame. After becoming famous for attaching himself to a hunting party of outlaw and public enemy #1 at the time Ma Barker (IMO I deduce his own self reported inflation of his involvement by all publicly available records) where the gang was successfully broken up, he wanted more of the spotlight. Despite the crime being committed a couple hundred miles out of Cheyenne’s jurisdiction, he inserted himself in the most diabolical way. He knew he’d get a conviction due to Joe just not being able to defend himself during moments of self incrimination like the obvious fact he had an alibi or that he was not presumably a consenting party to his violent attack (the gang that assaulted him was criminally violent by the reporting which was light) when he was 14 years old that resulting in the verifiable letter which ended up being life altering from the probation officer that stumbled on the grisly scene. It’s one of those stories so awful that it inspires change. Just so tragic his entire life was taken . For what? Fleeting glory to a lawman who didn’t want to be forgotten.
