  1. 12:09 this might be one of the more frustrating mysteries I’ve ever come across. I’ve wasted what has surely amounted to months over the years sporadically looking into this. It’s truly worthy of this series. It’s really hard to appropriately grasp the depth of the horror is his fate. The only one reliably case study with detailed notations is that of charles domery. The amount of complications and compensating behaviors as well as stacking adverse effects is astounding. A normal person would have succumbed to many natural complications from this lifestyle but somehow he soldiered on. One of the more fascinating parts of his story are any apparent concrete depictions of his failing mental state or even cognitive function. Upon DDXing even the vast medical issues we can cross reference today, many fall when cross referencing his fairly unreliable descriptions of all other symptoms. But one would think at that time if there was a noticeable lack of cognition, it would have been readily reported. Not to mention the account you describe of his military mission was perfectly accurate. He was fit for duty and even trusted to some degree beyond the normal soldier. While at the time his eating habits were far too focused on as his condition itself instead of a symptom (understandably so), Today we can reasonably assume he very clearly had some gradations of thyroid malfunction or perpetual thyroid storm of some degree but Caused by further underlying conditions. It’s simply impossible to figure out due to a lack of proper investigation from the time. For instance even his death which was reported to be TB has no genuine underlying medical observations that conclusively make it true beyond doubt. I’ve long suspected there must be some element of robust parasitic infection which is quite possible to have been missed in his autopsy considering circumstances. There’s no doubt he was dealing with habitual mass infection. It’s easy to focus on his food intake but once you adjust that could easily have been a product of his excessive and perpetual diarrhea, you’re left witb the more perplexing observed descriptions of his ever present warm body temps, long bouts of sleep to the point a Neurological factor must be considered (but again this could have been a devastating compensating behavior by the body), and excessive sweating, I still land on severe infection brought on by an otherwise deadly diet stemming from an undiagnosed thyroid issue that could have affected many more contemporary patients. but symptoms manifest much different and both Charles & Tarrare are of a hyper specific time in history of war and famine. I’ve never quite been able to piece together that factor but there’s a few reasons their fates have many parallels given their survival in very trying circumstances that again lead back to similar compensating behaviors. Idk this comment is a meandering reflection of how confusing he was and while I’m delighted to see this channel yet again deliver an obscure example of the more scary interesting parts of life, this is one i sometimes do wish I never learned about. An enigma that you knowingly will never solve but can’t help yourself.
