  3.  @bbcmotd  propaganda? Did you mean that word? All you’d need to do is study the historical record from this universally held position by nearly all informed scholars. I’m not sure why you think Soviets are “retreating” when they encircled the German 6th as well as Romanian 3rd and 4th, nearly a quarter million strong. Uranus depended on Russian numbers mate. That quite literally was the point. The armchair team usually tells specific stories and they did an excellent job telling this one as it was, in a way, told from Zhukov’s perspective. The soviets had the numbers at that point in time but had to be tactful if they wanted to win Stalingrad. Griffin touches on the Nazi desperation for fuel but it could be conveyed in even more desperate fashion. Hitler would have surely like to embarrass his once comrade by taking his eponymous city but no doubt the real motivation was the Caucasus oil fields. The Germans, still fueled by arrogance from the likes of their successful ground dominance in France, overextend on the eastern front. Zhukov slow plays his hand and lures Hitler in. Indeed the goal is to appear weak to provoke overcompensation by the German Wolf who has begun to show its weakness in late 1942. Once they take the bait, The Red Army unleashes hell and pincers right through the German line which had all but encircled Stalingrad focusing on the near 70,000 Romanians fighting for the Reich. You reference a pincer as if it’s weak position. This is inherently flawed thinking. Pincers are only maintained through strength. The sheer ability to expend materiel and sacrifice human life was critical for success at the Don River ultimately in what became a war of attrition. Any sane battle commander would have granted a break out but we know hitler was not in his right mind. Thus dooming many Germans to death and many more soviets despite their ultimate success. It’s the tactics by Zhukov that justify my analogy which has been heavily documented in the bloodiest single conflict in the history of documented war.
