  1. This isn’t true. I mean… not technically. Those chosen for pit crew have a sole responsibility to the car. You seem to watch the sport and be knowledgeable so you know how big a difference 1 second makes . It’s not crazy that that is their ENTIRE ROLE.bc it is. The wheel jack man is not doing anything else but wheel jack stuff at a race. They are LITERALLY sitting there with their nomex suit unzipped to the chest and visor up waiting. The entire race. I’ve been in those garages I’m telling you that’s what they do. Maybe you meant like on Thursday - Saturday? Even still, the pit crew is practicing . While yes they are still mechanics and likely will do some of that work, they need to be sharp and rested. The operating word there is “mechanics”. The pit crew are still mechanics too. They are chosen from the mechanics pool. You’re conflating the overarching technical staff with the literal pit crew. The pit crew is a very specific group of individuals much like the wall crew where you will find your race engineer, principal for the most part (sometimes Toto is in the garage), aerodynamics, etc. Ferrari is a unit that usually doesn’t deviate from this. Fred is always on the wall with both race engineers. That’s all they do. They don’t touch the car EVER on race day. And again if you meant maybe non race day, by then the other staff wouldn’t be too hands on to control for change: by the time of a race you’re not going to be changing the car much. If there’s a wreck or setup changes are needed that’s when there’s people tagging in as they have to work late into the night . But clean the actual pit crew eg the wheel man, the jackman, etc that is their entire role. They are wizards with the gun. The fitness of the wheel movers needs to be on point . And their responsibilities are limited accordingly in order for them to perform their roles perfectly on race day. Outside race day they become more or less engineers and mechanics again. If your point was put crew are qualified mechanics, you’re 100% correct.
