@knockhello2604 Even if you like the city it doesn't mean you have to constantly go down to spend your time there. I live in Toronto and as a teen I use to go downtown all the time to have fun and spend my time there, but now as I've grown up and moved out in the suburbs, I don't miss downtown at all and will be lucky to go down there maybe once or twice a year at most. The suburbs have matured enough to have everything that downtown does and then some, but without the crime, violence and assorted crazy people.

I think alot of people wouldn't mind living in more dense housing and neighborhoods, but the problem is in many cases city planners and developers make crappy decisions that lead to poorly constructed communities. City planners constantly make shitty decisions that force people to rely on cars to get around and developers have little to no desire to build large condo units suitable for larger families to raise their kids in. I mean why do that when you can maximize profit by building smaller one or two bedroom units that you can sell for more money? Also in North America there's still tons of land around so with so much space to build on, there's no incentive for people to build more highrises in the suburbs rather than new homes.

@ryandomo5018 'The city controls zoning codes and all the regulations that create the American suburban environment, so we should change the rules to allow and encourage more sustainable development.' Changing the zoning laws might help, but I feel its already too late in many places. No one is ever going to stop building houses now and the best you can hope for is that developers will slowly fill in the gaps of already built neighhourhoods with higher density housing. For example in Toronto where I am, I live in the suburbs where its mostly houses and townhouses and some condos and apartments mixed in here and there. Recently a couple blocks away from me a developer tore down a large old plaza on a corner and is now building a row of townhouses. I think that's what we can hope for more of at best because people want will continue to want houses first if they can afford it and then look at other options if they can't. Only way you could ever stop more houses being built and more sprawl from happening is if the local government forces high density housing and with all the land we have I doubt that will ever happen.
