US cities: Take down elevated highways because they're ugly and divide the city!! Tokyo: We have elevated highways running throughout the heart of our city and transit rail lines running between high rises and businesses built DIRECTLY UNDER rail bridges and everything looks cool, integrated and pretty.

@mukrifachri That's the thing though. The way the Japanese designed it, even with wide multi-lane roads and elevated highways and rail lines running throughout Tokyo, its stil a great city where those roads and rail lines don't make the city any worse, but increase the ability of their population to move around. Where I live in Toronto, the city only has one elevated expressway running through its city core and yet many people can complained about it and have wanted to tear it down for many years now because it 'divides the city from its waterfront and it looks ugly' etc. To me I've always like the Gardiner and I wish Toronto would have at least a couple of more highways running through it to make traffic flow better. If Tokyo can do it and have it not negatively impact their city why can't other cities do it as well?

@Jay-ho9io What racism and classism? Where developers built their highways on cheaper land located in poorer neighourhoods? What other issues were there?

@mukrifachri They may not have the big multi-lane highways that the GTA has, but they look to have WAY more highways in general in and around Tokyo. If Toronto/GTA had even half as many highway/expressways as Tokyo and their region had, people would be losing their minds. So yes the GTA might have more lanes on their highways, but Tokyo has wayyy more running throughout their city and suburbs that the GTA does. As for their surface roads well it seems to work for them in that they can have multi-lane roads running throughout their city and yet they have plenty of pedestrian friendly areas branching off those roads too so they seem to have a good mix of both that makes their city very people friendly despite having alot of vehicle traffic running through the city as well.
