@RockinRedRover anyone who knows how Russia fights its wars, knows they prefer to use artillery first, be they rockets or guns. The Russians are fighting this war like it was WWII because of all the armored vehicle losses they took early in the war that has reduced them to relying on artillery and rockets. That and the fact that their airforce has been mostly useless in supporting their ground forces. No modern western army would be fighting this war like the Russians are and they certainly wouldn't be throwing away their troops the way that the Russians have either.

@RockinRedRover However, my original point stands, and is correct, the Russian army (like Napoleon's to a degree), was always keen on using artillery to soften an enemy, due to the inherently poor standard of their infantry especially from a low level leadership viewpoint - a throwback to the Stalin purges of their trained officers in early Ww2 I think the Russians haven't moved away from artillery as much as western armies have is because they don't have the technology and resources to do so. It costs alot of money and requires alot of knowledge to develop advanced aircraft and arming them with advanced munitions and the same goes for long range precision guided missiles. If the Russians had the know how and money that the US had, they'd probably move away from artillery as well, but since they don't having a large artillery force is probably the next best thing. As for using prisoners to be troops in a war, I doubt that would ever happen in the west because they care about even scum of the earth criminals and believe their lives are still worth protecting and even at times they're more protected than the victims.
