I think the problem may be some people seeing best before dates on bottled, canned, frozen foods etc. and thinking that beyond that date that they need to throw it out when its still perfectly fine even if perhaps less than optimal freshness. Foods that are very perishable like fresh fruits, vegetables, dairy products etc. definitely have a limited time before you need to throw them out, but for canned, bottled, frozen or other well sealed items, those can last a super long time. Sometimes when I see some things that are super cheap I stock up and then eat it over many months or years later and it tastes pretty much the same as if I ate it right away before the best before date.
