@KristenRowenPliske At the founding of the US, and for maybe 50 years after, there were so many German speaking people, German could have been an official language! Germans settled in huge numbers, especially in the frontier areas that our country was expanding in. We owe quite a debt to those German settlers for helping us people those areas and expand. Behind the English, Scots irish, the Germans are the most numerous ancestors, and why there was so much fear of the influence they might have during the world wars. The city i live in now had a vibrant german community that was very much out in the open. They had to go quiet, to almost hide themselves during the World wars, to ensure they werent seen as traitors. Unfortunately, their mistreatment has largely gone unnoticed, and i think that is because they were European white, instead of people of color. But the german-Americans experienced back lash to varying degrees.

I totally agree that the collective guilt imposed on Germany is totally over done! Imagine if we imposed such a guilt on the UK, France or Belgium for all the horrible things they have wrought throughout history! certainly the European colonization of Africa is FAR worse than what we had done to the slaves here in the US, since its intent was equally as racist, and did far more damage to Africa, than simply owning slaves. i think we can tell that the English & the French have won history by their ability to escape the intense shaming that other countries experienced for lesser crimes than what both those countries committed, and for longer periods of time! As far as our fascination with war, I figured this was a more recent phenomenon amongst the working class & middle class people. The US was reluctant to join up in 'the party' (WW1 was actually much looked forward to in Europe, before it started), because the masses wanted to avoid it! The American populace had to be coaxed into it with both propaganda, and a casus belli to draw us into it. I realize this was an embarrassment amongst the political class in the US, so they had to change our culture to have the American public more fascinated with war. We were told: if we dont fight Hitler over there, he will arrive on our door step!
