  3.  @canucktruckerbear Unfortunately, the French-Canadiens were treated as 2nd class citizens! My ancestors came to New England with close to a million other French Canadiens, and most lost their French. The French Canadiens were slower to assimilate, being SO close to the homeland compared to all the other immigrant waves that were coming to the US.

  5. Because in the ROC there have been tiny corners of French language. Many francophones who leave now are newer immigrants. The English speaking community in Quebec is MUCH larger comparatively AND have been there since the FRENCH fled North America and left their colonist cousins behind. Thats well over 200 years there has been a substantial english presence. NO ONE is saying that the Quebec Frenchies MUST be anglophones; but respect the large minority of anglos that have lived amongst you since your arriere arriere arriere arriere grand-pere was alive.

  20. While you make a very good, valid point it is far more complicated than that! There are many large and small issues at stake simultaneously. War is definitely good for the economy, as our leaders lead us into recessions and perhaps depressions(economic)! Putin instantly becomes the whipping boy for all the mistakes that our western governments continue to make. Oil is a significant casus bello ( particularly for the UN to involve itself as much as it has).

  22. UN Nations sending troops escalates the conflict to a full war. Russia is using language for their excursion into Ukraine similar to what the US used going into Korea & vietnam. A formal declaration of war has not been made, so therefore Russia is not using the totality of what it has available for a conventional declared war. As soon as we send troops, formally, then nuclear weapons are on the table as far as Russia's defence strategy

So, making people learn literary french in school without a grounding in the predominate accent and slang is just a pointless endeavor Many Quebeckers have stories & complaints of the continental French struggling to understand them, and being typically snooty about it. THATs how non-quebeckers feel when speaking French with typical Quebeckers. Not all of you are clowns about your language, and it is MUCH appreciated.

To those of us who learn it as a 2nd or 3rd language, it not so easy, because we TRANSLATE french into our language. Unless one is surrounded by it and forced to engage in it, it never totally becomes natural.

  35. What you are saying is ALSO very reasonable and unfortunate that you couldnt have that meeting all in French to accommodate the majority instead of the minority. If i were you, or a francophone I would be hurt and offended as well! Many of us are very sympathetic to your plight and cheer on the protection of French amongst the Francophonie, and your attempts to share the language. it is a very beautiful and precise language. But its a lot harder to learn than Francophones appreciate, and not all are as patient as we need you to be while we try to master it.
