Szilard actually patented chain reaction five years earlier, and he wrote in the paper uranium as a potential candidate which could sustain it with a bunch of other elements, on which he was wrong, but noone could know at the time.

Well I guess if Brits would listen to Szilard they could have a working bomb by the start of WWII. So WWII would possibly never happen at all. He only asked 6000 pounds for researching all the potential candidates for fission and he was rejected, he named five elements which could potentially sustain fission and uranium was one of them. The worst decision which was made in the history of mankind, especially since he turned out to be capable to design a working nuclear reactor for the Americans, and from that on it was only a matter of engineering effort to build a nuke. I think Churchill's cigars costed more for a week than that money. The takeaway is never to be cheapass when a clever man aproach you with an idea.
