Actually Shannon's paper is pretty much based on Leo Szilard's 1929 paper regarding to enthropy in thermodynamics, where a Maxwell demon requires certain amount of energy to store information about the energy states of the gas he lets pass through a gate. Shannon was convinced by von Neumann to name his unit as enthropy because he was aware of Szilard's work, and knew that they are talking about the same thing.
