The problem is, you consider medieval europe as some part of western Europe. It isnt even western Europe in general, because Umayyad caliphate posessed half of the iberian peninsula, where literally was what you describe north african merchants and christians doing business, but in Eastern Europe it was even more prevalent, since the Byzantine empire actually owned half of the middle east, and of course every nationality and race was present in Constantinople. The western bias is, that movies and even historians generally dont give a damn to those places, meanwhile those were the biggest players in medieval europe. Thats because classical historians dont give a damn about middle ages, middle age historians are focused on catholic western europe, and orthodox nations are put to the oriental side, and islamic nations arent interested in making research on the history of a christian country.
