  8. So my 50 cents. This movie is quite okay, it is not as good, as it is marketed, but certainly an improvement over Top Gun. Cruise does well what he is good in, this self ironic character. I would say I had some minor problems with it until the final part, which kinda ruined it. So there is no point to have normal jets and scramjet independently in an aeroplane, The point of scramjet is that it can operate even on low speed regimes, so a nromal jet would be dead weight. He wants to do a Mach 10 to impress the pentagon which is alright, but if he wants to make his best effort he wouldn't put the jet in an ascending turn, because he would crazily lose speed by that, and put extra stress on the plane he would dive in a straight line to gain extra speed. Actually I should give Cruise a + because he is the only one from his incompetent followers, who actually know, thet the internal speed measurement, of an aeroplane is not precise enough to go for exactly 10 mach, he has to do more to be certain. And I have a strong gut feeling, that catapulting in a hypersonic flight means an insta kill, so the flight of Superman wouldn't look as cool as to watch Mr Cruise's flight out of a shattering plane at 10 mach. By the way Ed Harris was right about the drones, but for the wrong reason. If we talk about these hypersonic speeds, then it is evident, that this plane could do such maneuvers easily, what would exceed the G tolerance of any living humans, so to have a fighter jet pilot in the pilot's seat is a heavy underutilization of its capabilities. As we informed, the airframe fo F-18 is heavily deformed by a bombing run, but he regularly makes Pugachev's Cobra maneuver without any problem, which would put even more extreme stress to the airframe. The killing of the nuclear installation was a little bit to starwarsey for me, but ok its a nod. Besides the whole mission could be done more easily with some tomahawk missiles, those can fly under radar, and don't need GPS, just a terrain photo to identify their target. But instead of cruise missiles we get Cruise with missiles. Using chaffes against most of these kind of AA rockets is utterly pointless, as these are mainly radar guided missiles, and even if chaffes would work, these don't need a direct contact with the plane to kill it, they just detonate in the vincinity of the plane and the fragment shatter the jet into pieces. Besides to trick out a rocket requires heavy maneuvering, if the pilot continues in a straight line, the rocket would lock on him a second later. So these were the forgivable stuff, and I would say if Maverick would die when he was shot down, then it would be an almost perfect movie, but what comes next is really jumping the shark. So there is no chance, that an F-14 can liftoff from a smaller field than a carrier, where it additionally gets headwind, and assisted by a steam catapult. They supposed to fight 5 gen stealth fighters, by their lookalike they look Sukhoi 57-s, yet even the F-18-s have less problem to hide from radar than these planes. Ok they are not completely invisible, but they would know if an AWACS is watching them, and try to hide from it. But according to this movie, while Maveric and son can see a 5th gen fighter on their radar, but a 5th gen fighter cannot see, that Captain America, or who was that other guy, is incoming, in his radar. Besides these again would not use IR rockets to kill MAverick, but radar guided missiles fired from a great distance. And yes, there is a theoretical possibility to shoot down these with an F-14, even without retrofitting it but thats as slight as to shoot down a WWII spitfire with a WWI Red Baron. Even if we take that fact away, F14 is actually less maneuverable in low speed regimes than the Sukhoi, it was even when these planes were really in one league, so to go into dogfight with it is alone a suicidal act. Balls of steel doesn't subtitute simple physics. But overall the movie was kinda good. Maybe it was just me, expecting more because of the overhype. The Right Stuff is still better if you ask me. 6/10.
