My granddad barely escaped the Battle of Budapest. His regiment was ordered out into the Balaton two days prior the soviets enclosed the city. They were engineering corps most likely they would detonate the bridges, but Germans had a feeling that Hungarians wouldnt necessarily obey these orders. He told these stories how he was a lucky bastard during the war, he fought with the 1st Hungarian army stationed near Pripyat, they built roads there, while the 2nd army was stationed near Voronezh and was completely annihilated by the Soviets. When the Soviets caught him he wasnt even punished or interned although he was a volunteer in the Finnish side during the Winter war, that was his only active engagement, which he talked about. How the Hungarian government smuggled them out, since the Molotov Ribbentrop pact was in force, so they couldnt travel directly to Finnland, they went as a tourist group through Britain then they were educated on skying and winter warfare. He got a state medal from the Finnish government in 1990, he was very moved.
