The EU does not buy energy at all. Member states do.

And japan, South Korea, basically everyone. Energy is not a thing to be played with.

Because in a free market customers should decide that from whom they are buying from their basic commodities.

The question is how much do you intend to pay for a total detachment.
2
Because Europe does not trust the US thatmuch. They have a tendency to do 180 degree turns on their foreign policy.
1
20 years long contracts for something which can be bought from anywhere in the world? I smell corruption here dear EU citizens!
1
Its different. Spot market is generally cheaper.
1
Well, not entirely true, it was 15% in the first quarter of 2023, it is up to 24% on pipelines, and another 12% on LNG now.

What should be the morals of this story?
1
Well, there is a certain European interest in defending the eastern borders, otherwise western european countries should send there not only their equipment but their troops to protect the eastern flank. On the other hand if EU citizens freeze because of some neocon idiotism, that wouldnt be too moral either. Common sense is the moral standpoint here. @@ummerrahh

Yeah, and as far as I remember Ukraine imported their gas from Russia after they annexed Crimea. So whats your point? I guess that we can agree on the point that the EU shouldnt worry more about Ukrainian territorial integrity than Ukraine itself do.
1
Well, we pay for gas, not for ideologies. Dont our citizens have the right not to freeze during the winter? Russian internal politics is exactly that, of course we have less responsibility for that than Russian citizens do. You can do whatever you want with Putin, we wont stand in your way. @Nowherenear-w1d

It cant be repaired it has to be rebuilt.
1
It is filled with seawater, and it has to be completely dehydrated even before starting to repair it, because natural gas needs to be almost totally moistureless. Noone did such an enterprise before. @fingerprint8479
1
No its not cheaper. Russian gas on pipelines generally have fixed price contracts, which is attached on the oil prices. Spot market works in the way, that an LNG tanker ship starts up from a Russian port, and its cargo is in bid while it moves, and it will travel to the port of the highest bidder, so its price is not fixed to anything. @yp77738yp77739

I dont think that member states trust eachother thatmuch, to give up such an important part of their economy to a central EU government, which does or does not take into account their interests. I didnt hear that Germans want to pay kurtzarbeit and gas reimbursements for the whole EU besides their own citizens, which they have to if they want to control the energy policy of the union. @jebbo-c1l
1
Well, on papaer maybe, in reality all energy companies are controlled by their respective states. @qinby1182

Russian uranium manufacturers are actually more versatile than their EU or US counterparts.
1
I mean, if you ask a french or american manufacturer, they say that you have to rebuild your reactor in order to be able to use their fuel casettes, which is ridiculous, meanwhile Russians can manufacture fuel casettes for the customer's liking.
