that is a hell of a lot of friction to overcome

You really gonna call that a plane??

the missing link is effectiveness. They aren't. If they were, they would automatically be sought after by the market and thus cheapened over time. The problem is that they simply don't work. Gasoline cars-or any cars for that matter-had no supportive infrastructure whatsoever when they first came about. They still were effective and useable, and thus were sought after, despite not being practical for the average person. Over time, as they were made more accessible, everyone had them. And here we are today! Now if "renewables" (which is a sketchy term in itself) were more effective, we'd all be using them. Give it time

Imagine making this today out of carbon-kevlar, OMG

I wouldn't call methanol and turbos insane engineering. It's more like standard procedure, but the best new example in planes
1
@DChrls people started calling them turbos by the late 30s. You mean to say that they called them superturbochargers.

@allgameriot1291 so you're ok with your car braking on one side with half the power of your car's engine at full throttle? Because that would throw you right into a tree
1
@allgameriot1291 let me rephrase this then, let’s say your car brakes with 50% of your car’s maximum engine power, you ok with that?
