Anna, it's very simple. This war started not in 2022 but back in April 2014 when the new self-imposed and unconstitutional government in Kiev led by illegal acting president Turchinov started bombing ethnic Russians in Donbass who had refused to submit to the unconstitutional authorities. This is how this war was started, the war that has been going on for nine years already. As both Zelenskij, Merkel and Hollande admitted they were all preparing for a retake of Donbass, which would have resulted in the death of even more of ethnic Russians there. Russia, of course, knew all that. Besides, Ukraine was eager to join Russia's deadly enemy NATO. Russians had already learned all too well from such violations of international law like bombing Yugoslavia in 1999 and invading Iraq in 2003 that NATO was not to be trusted. Russia had repeatedly been telling the West that NATO's creeping toward Russia's borders was a dangerous thing to do, but the West continued doing what it was doing. Hence Russia had nothing else left but to fight back.
