  4. That has nothing to do the with the dead internet conjecture (calling it a theory just means you don’t know what a theory is). People SEO spam. They have since the first search engines were a thing, it’s just gotten easier to do it at large scale so the garbage results are more noticeable.

  5. @ I don’t know why they bother telling you how many total results there are but they only let you see like 10-20 pages of them because almost nobody goes past the first three and there’s a ton of optimization and caching that can be done when you only need to bother with the top X results for a query

  6. No it’s not. The “theory” which isn’t at all a theory, doesn’t even make sense at a fundamental level. If everything you see online isn’t posted by real people then how is it I can post things online and see them, from my account, from other accounts, on platforms you don’t even need an account. Bot traffic is still very easy to spot, just because it’s on the rise doesn’t at all mean all content comes from bots. And state actors and other groups have been putting out propaganda en masse since newspapers were a thing. This is nothing new.

  7. I think it’s great that Honey is stealing money from the same content creators (and I mean that as an insult) who are shilling for it. Serves them right. That’s what they get for being greedy scum bags who shill all sorts of shady things without caring or researching what they are. They don’t care when their audience gets ripped off, not going to feel bad that they’re finally getting some of that.

  8. @ They all operate primarily on backlinks like they all have since Google started. More “better” backlinks and you win, so older content or content on massive platforms, or content someone paid a ton of money to buy backlinks for will rise to the top. This has been true since Google first came out. It’s not new and it has nothing to do with some dumb narrative that there are no humans online creating content.

  13.  @MoonlitLuka The overwhelming majority aren’t worth it. They’re operated by people who sell spam as a service and there’s always people willing to blow cash to try out any advertising method. It’s also dirt cheap to set up and operate these things so you don’t need much of an ROI. It’s why spam emails are still a thing despite almost nobody buying anything from a spam email and why so many of them shifted to phishing attempts.

  14. @ The bots are still easy to sus out, the paid shills can be a bit harder but still fairly obvious after a few exchanges as it’s just a job, they usually stick to a script or at least a lost of talking points and can only rephrase them to some extent, and they are really focused on those talking points. Like the Chinese Wumao shills, they will launch into stilted attacks on your government if it’s a non-friendly and refuse to discuss anything negative about China. Everything gets deflected with some half baked version of “What about the things your country does”. I’m e you’ve seen it a couple of times it becomes easy to spot. They’re also pretty dumb and will use a profile pic showing they’re Chinese, usually so,ethereal in China, and will even set their location as being in China… but they don’t have YT in China so they’ve got special access or are using a VPN, and why would a Chinese national break their law, use a VPN to access an illegal platform, just to defend their own government, which they’re disobeying lol
