Forests don’t really trap carbon. All the carbon the plants use eventually gets released back into the atmosphere along with far worse methane from biomass decomposition. At most they capture a fixed maximum amount per tree for as long as the tree is alive and not fully decomposed, which is nothing in the global context. If there’s a fire, most of it gets instantly released back. You can’t keep planting trees to offset carbon emissions, there’s literally not enough room on the entire planet. To offset just one year worth of human carbon emissions you’d need to find an area larger than the US without any trees and turn it into a dense forest. And you’d have to do that again next year and every year forever. It’s just a greenwashing money making gimmick. As a barrier to desert encroachment, sure. But if you think planting trees does anything for climate change, I’ve got a bridge to sell you, and a bunch of trees.
