No it didn’t. They lied about how they made the model, lied about what it cost, overhyped its capabilities, and had to rely on knowledge distillation from OpenAI models to make it.

MS isn’t a good bellwether here. A lot of their AI investment was based on the delusion that people wanted Copilot baked into Office, Windows, everything, and that Recall wasn’t a horrible idea. When all these other big tech companies start scaling back then you’ve got a point but MS is just realizing people don’t want their AI spyware and Office AI upsell.

Lowering rates isn’t going to create long term jobs. It might let companies refinance Covid debt at a lower rate but they’re not going back to basically 0% interest so it’s not like there will be a flood of cheap money leading to a hiring spree. Plus companies aren’t raising salaries even if they do hire a bit more. There’s too much oversupply in the labor pool for a 1-2% drop in interest to make a difference. It also won’t magically undo 4 years of high inflation. So you’ve got stagnant wages, permanent cost of living increases which means consumer spending has nowhere to go but down. And companies aren’t going to go on a hiring spree in the face of declining spending. They’re going to do exactly what they are, freeze hiring, lay off anyone they can, and use the decrease in labor costs to try and offset revenue declines while they ride out the recession.

@lankeastor512 Get O&O ShutUp10++ (free) and use that to disable at least all the recommended things. That will disable a ton of the things that reach out to Microsoft’s servers and report on you in the process. It’ll also disable a bunch of the nagging alerts to “finish setting up your system” and disable copilot. Works on windows 10 and 11. I used that after doing a clean, debloated install of windows which kept all the app ads and unwanted apps from being installed. But it does install copilot so that’s where O&O ShutUp10++ comes in to turn off the settings you mostly have to dig into the registry or group policy to disable.
