@Mhvn1987 No, the other way around. The English had so soldiers on a chip, but the Dutch was a real marine corps very much like it is today. But politics love to chance history.

@wouter8294 The Roman empire had then 200 BC. So what do we call Marines? A soldier on a boat? Then we can probably go back for 10.000 years when the Chinese cross the sea to become the latter Japanese.......

English is a young language that has a lot of old-Dutch in it and Frisian as well. (Frisian is a old Scandinavian language still spoken in the north of the Netherlands. I think it is not that hard for you to learn to understand and even speak Dutch. Reading and writing will be a different ball game.

The Romans brought large quantities of soldiers by boat. Among them the feared famous X legion to Africa. So if "coming from a boat" is similar to a Marine, the Roman had it about 200BC.
