Its a major misconception that any Chinese martial art is used on the battlefield. If you study the history of Chinese metalworking and the developing of Chinese weapons, you find things like a repeating crossbow, yes, the machine gun of archery. You will find well thought bows, effective arrows and high quality swords and other metal weapons and armor which are by far superior on the battlefield then any martial art.
Why would they spend all those time, money and effort, for many centuries, on those weapons if every Chinese soldier in the past could Kung Fu himself through the battlefields?
That said, it is faster to learn fighting with swords and archery, so you can build up an larger army faster. All wars, even today, proof that this is a major thing to do if you want to win a war. And in the past, China won many....
