Dutch and Frisian were the the core languages where English is based on. But in the centuries the languages went their own way. But it is still viable today. But also German and French can be found.
The most known word from German is kindergarten.
Some French: table, chair, restaurant, ballet, fiance, queue, mansion, button
Dutch: boss, cookie, plunder, uproar, foreground, landscape, pump, yacht, skipper, frolic, spook, wagon, dike, booze, luck, Santa Claus......
Frisian: bread, cheese, key, door, year, green, after, meaning
And this are just a few. There are hundreds (again a dutch word) (word, also dutch) (also = German)
English is about 700 to 800 years old so the languages developed their own ways. Back those days it was normal most people couldn't write. So at the moment they started to make the fist English dictionaries there was already some own development in the language. But some words were spelled the same, but grew to an other meaning. Other words kept their "sound" but were written differently. Other words are just copied in writing and pronounce.
