Fact is, it is not HAL but IAF which decides what it wants. Tejas is a point defense aircraft meant as a replacement of Mig21 interceptor fighters. With change of technology this role has ended making the role of a point defense aircraft redundant. Development of Tejas was further compounded by IAF changing the specs whenever any prototype of Tejas neared finalization. This was done to create the need for costly multi million dollars kickback laden imported fighter jets. With such a corrupt military we can only win wars against Pakistan army which is far corrupt than the Indian military. HAL is not perfect, but in a nation of bullock carts, it has brought the nation to jet age.

42 squadron was decided several decades ago when Chinese and Pakistan air forces were equipped with very different kinds of fighters and wars were fought with technology that is considered vintage and redundant today. With area denial systems like S400, Patriot, THAAD the role of point defense fighters and dogfight has become redundant. Thereby negating the need for such fighters. For deep strike we have cruise missiles, tactical ballistic missiles, drones and other unmanned systems which again negate the need for manned fighters something which Elon Musk touched upon. UCAVs, drones can perform same tasks far more efficiently than manned fighters. USA too is going slow on manned fighters and relying more on legacy jets till unmanned systems replace them. This was also touched upon by latest Top Gun movie. So, we need to revisit the need for 42 squadron.
