@SlyRyFry I have a PDF with over 1,800 guitar scales. There's probably more than that out there. You'd need a lifetime to memorize all that, but there are other things I'd like to do. When I realized that, my quest to master all the scales was pretty much over lol. I took Joe Satriani's advice of picking two modes and trying to master those. Obviously Ionian is the mode everyone should know. Also if you learn the Nashville numbering system, which is just learning intervals instead of the notes on the fretboard, it can help you learn modes faster and they're less confusing.

@fu9793 Hey man...In my experience that's the easiest scale to learn but the hardest to make it sound musical, and not just like a scale.

@justaguy328 Yea that's pretty much what I do. There's confusion between the two, but I meant fingering possibilities for scales more than scales themselves. There's really only one scale. The major scale and everything else is an alteration of the major scale.

@Oscarrrrrrrrrrr Yes you could stop there. For me, I see guitar as an instrument that I'll devote a lifetime to learning. I'll likely never learn every single permutation, and as you said, I don't think it's needed, but I try to learn something new on the guitar every single day.
