That seems to make sense. Without the observer reality would probably be chaos.

Hmmmm, I wonder what the world looks like without human perception?

Not to worry, I don't feel insulted ;-)

:-) that's very nice. I've always found the idea that the brain gives rise to consciousness fascinating, but that begs the question, what gives rise to the brain? It's kind of weird to ask that but we need a brain to give rise to consciousness. It's like the chicken egg debate.

I assume you're referring to certain kinds of biological life that don't have a nervous system but can still sense their environment? Like the Venus Fly Trap? However, even thought it can't be proven that consciousness resides in the mind, we're talking about conscious awareness.

The brain could just be the receiver of consciousness that's manifesting consciousness on the physical realm. Then when you destroy the receiver, the signal is still there. Just as when you destroy a TV set, the tv signal is still there. There is no scientific way of testing this.

Damaging certain areas in the brain to alter consciousness is not evidence that consciousness resides in the brain; it's just evidence that you're damaging areas in the brain that alter human perception. Entheogenic substances have the same perception altering effect.

I get what you're saying. However, there's lot of stuff out there that we still don't understand so we make due with the theories that best explain the phenomenon with the science that we currently have. That's our modern take on consciousness. It's not unlike the Higgs Boson which gives matter it's density but which there is no evidence for. The only thing they have to go on is that matter has weight, but we haven't found what gives it weight, so they came up with the Higgs Boson.

Well, how about cameras?
1
How can you assure me that consciousness resides in the brain?
1
Heh, you're probably right. English is my second language.
1
Our scientific knowledge is not suitable to find the answer to what is consciousness, but maybe one day.
1
I don't know where it resides, but I think it doesn't reside in the mind. I think the source is elsewhere. Probably a quantum level event that we don't yet understand. But consider that individual atoms aren't conscious, nor three, nor 300, nor 3,000, but trillions of atoms in a particular sequence emits consciousness?
1
That's not very reassuring.

I know that you believe that there are people out there who solved this debate and age old question, but it is simply not true. Whoever told you that it's settled didn't know what they were talking about or lied to you. The mainstream model of consciousness that we have today definitely sees it as something that is produced in the brain. The other view is that the brain is the receiver of consciousness that's manifesting consciousness on the physical realm.
1
Haha yeah! Fun stuff for sure.

where it gets confusing to me is when talking about the quantum observer effect..that an observer changes the outcome of the thing being observed. Whether or not that's true, I don't know, you kind of have to take their word for it, but it's interesting. It has interesting implications on reality.
