Lorazepam... The ER Wonder Pill!... I learned a similar breathing technique that works extremely well. It's called "Box Breathing" and is what Navy Seals do to learn to control their breathing. I agoraphobia and am manic. Anxiety and Panic attacks have been a lifetime thing. The problem with the Meds? Is your body becomes dependant on them to do the job IT should be doing. Then when or if you try to stop the meds? The "Condition" returns with a vengeance and adds a few more symptoms... 1.) Inhale through nose to a count of "X" (it's different for everyone when starting). 2.) Hold the breath in for the same count of "X". 3.) Exhale through the mouth to a count of the same "X". 4.) Hold the breath out for the same count of "X". The best way to determine "X" is to exhale and push out as much air from your lungs as you can while staying relaxed. Once you have pushed it all out. Hold your breath and count (1000 - 1 / 1000-2 / etc.). Use that number for "X". Start with 5 cycles at "X" for a few days. Then move to 10 cycles and try to add 1 or 2 to "X"... Try to get "X" to 10, which is a good number. Work to get the number of cycles to 20. It's amazing how it becomes easier to breathe, relax, reduce anxiety without meds... It's also an excellent way to relax, quiet the mind, so you can fall asleep...

Depends Beth on whether or not the "Inner Voice" is a part of the problem ;-) (Racing thoughts). I like the box breathing technique I learned from an actual Navy Seal, not a healthcare provider. Quiets and calms the mind same as meditation.

@SkyClear You are like me. I have to edit and reread and edit posts or replies over and over due to the "Novel" effect 😁 I have routines that help me. Like I go to the same stores, I take the same routes to familiar places, etc. Also, I get to know the staff so should I become overwhelmed? I can simp[ly let someone know that I didn't abandon my cart, I just needed to step outside for a moment. Grocery stores and other large places are a challenge to my agoraphobia. They have also become a tool that I use to challenge myself. Like you I tell myself that I have been there and done that. It's rare now that I scare myself into the Emergency Room. I'm 55 and good for one every 7 to 10 years. I actually had one on April 1st, 2020. I woke up out of a sound sleep and got stuck in a loop. I HATE when that happens. None of my tools work. That's when I know to visit the ER. They don't do anything to help. It's like "Hey, I KNOW what wrong I just don't know how to break the loop." But they insist on blood tests and X-rays and ct scans. This last time I was kept overnight and because of Covid? Was one of two patients in the entire hospital. I have a luxury room with an endless supply of specialists poking and prodding and making the anxiety worse by their need to parade and invade my space. On the plus side? I learned that the Box breathing technique works so well... That when I was taken down for a stress test of my heart? They had to give me the entire dosage of the "Speedup" drug AND something extra because the box breathing becomes so natural and automatic that it even reacted to the drugs to cal, my breathing and slow down my heart. The Technician doing the imaging even commented that she could tell something was happening, she just didn't know what. I had a long conversation with the cardiologist afterward about "What" I had learned and "How" it's done. I "think" he learned something from me. I learned that the valve on the sinus side of my heart is a "little" enlarged, which is likely what causes my biggest trigger. I can "hear" my heartbeat and "Feel" it as well. It's an "Inside" sound. I don't know what's so hard about understanding what that means either. But various doctors give me a "Brain fart" look when I say that to them. Hah! See! I just realized I was doing it too!
