  2. Likely not, in the 80s China was like any other Commie country. A threat, a large army but not very modern, undertrained etc. Very different to China today which, for example, is expending 5x more missiles than the US does in training exercises. Fighting China in the 80s would have been like a Vietnam, fighting China today could be more like a Stalingrad for the USN.

  3. It's an issue for their ability to bully smaller nations, imperialism if you will. China is already a very large economy, it's industry outmatches the US by some margin, if China took back control of Taiwan then they would be adding even more industry and people to their economy. Something like 80% of microchips are made in Taiwan. From a military point of view also, no doubt, US advisers tell the president that Taiwan was important in the Japanese conquest of the Philippines and Japan's ability to project power in the whole region. It's ridiculous but this is their mindset, fearmongering, warmongering, whatever. "If China gets control of Taiwan then they'll be able to take over the whole of Asia like Japan did in the 1940s" is what they undoubtedly say.
