Calling Barbarossa a "failure" is like calling Overlord or Neptune a "failure". Sure the USSR survived Barbarossa, and sure the Allies failed to capture their objectives within their timeframe by several weeks, but it was the decisions made after Barbarossa that made things go downhill. The rather large one of course being the declaration of war on the USA (plus without an agreement from Japan to invade the USSR).

He wasn't forced to declare war on the USA though, that is arguably his major balls up.

@dejabu24 Yes I suppose the full answer is alot more complex, more like "He shouldn't have declared war on the USA without guarantees from Japan that they would invade Russia, as well as he shouldn't have split AGS during case blue or diverted Panzer armies away from Stalingrad" But the Japanese actually even told the Germans that they wouldn't be too bothered if they didn't declare war on the USA with them lol. It was the biggest "stealing defeat from the jaws of victory" in history.
