8:28 wrong. The Japanese were actually willing to withdraw from China in 1941 to lift the oil embargo, instead the USA demanded that Japan essentially made itself a vassal of America to lift the embargo. Which Japan, understandably, refused.

@jp38able No, the US demanded so much more than just "withdraw from China" because that was literally the only point that the Japanese negotiators were willing to accept. All the other demands which amounted to total national disgrace and humiliation, they were not willing to accept. No nation would.

@jp38able Yes and Harry Dexter White's plan was to have japan surrender to America or war. I can't find his exact quote but he goes on about how if Japan accepted (which no country ever would) the American terms then it would be a huge victory for Roosevelt. The Hull note didn't just demand a withdrawal from China though does it? Because the Japanese were willing and sort of wanting to withdraw from China after their failed offensives in 40 and 41. Again I don't keep sources for everything, I think it may have been Halder's diary but it is mentioned that both Japan and China wanted a face saving deal.

It's like saying Germany could have made a peace deal with Stalin in November 1941. They could have. But why would they ? "without mentioning Manchuria." That seems to be the problem, I think the Americans should have emphasised that bit. As the Japanese thought their demand included Manchuria. "Just because someone writes something in his diary doesn´t make it true." No but it gives incredible insight into private thoughts and personal dealings and when corroborated with other sources, the balance tips in the favour of "they're not lying". "Why should Harry Dexter have any working knowledge about US-japanese negotiations?" Because he was part of high level government and close advisor to people in the US government. Or do you think they all work in total isolation with each other, and don't spend alot of time with each other, at parties, meetings etc.

@CharlieZColt It's an assumption that you literally cannot prove to be incorrect without a time machine. Would the US sit by as Japan took over East Asia? Since they totally embargoed Japan for forming an agreement with France in Indochina, somehow I don't think Roosevelt would just sit by if Japan invaded the European colonies.

i doubt the soldier on the frontline knew what was happening, the higher ups didn't believe their intel who told them the germans were invading in previous years
