Imagine calling a young lad who fought to defend his country from the communists in hellish conditions "a coward". They didn't fight for Berlin, they fought for Europe alongside their German, Italian, Romanian, Slovakian, Danish, Belgian, Croatian, Finnish, Norwegian brothers. None of them would have known what secretive agreements the Allies would make with the communists, for all they knew the Soviets were coming for their country too.

@petersouthernboy6327 Allied soldiers fought to "liberate Europe from German tyranny" whilst SS men volunteered to liberate Europe from communist tyranny. Why is one to be frowned upon and not the other ? Almost every year a cliché movie comes out with American soldiers saving French civilians (and not shooting or bombing them) yet you would be horrified if someone portrayed the SS as defenders of civilians despite their actions in Narva allowing 80,000 Estonians flee to Germany and Sweden.

@morstyrannis1951 If you didn't want to fight for the communists then you had to fight for the fascist powers, sadly there was no third "swiss democratic" faction that was fighting the communists at that time. Similar themes can be found in the Spanish Civil War, George Orwell was against both fascists and communists yet decided to fight for the communist side, despite his repulsion of it.

@morstyrannis1951 even if it may be so, it does not negate the fact that men didn't leave their homes in Oslo or Brussels intending to fill the coffers of German Generals, rather they wanted to defend Europe from communism. I'd be happy to change my opinion if anyone can quote an author who argues most SS volunteers actually wanted to be subservient to Germany and did not join the SS for nationalist idealistic reasons

@morstyrannis1951 you may be aware that it was France that declared war on Germany. So on that count, everyone knew or had their own opinions on that war, however the much larger and more important war which they joined and many specifically joined for was the one against the communists. Many would be disappointed if they were stationed on the western front.

@HistoryGameV Not if the old government was ousted as the Netherlands then had a new government. This is where it is entirely politics. Look at France, France surrendered and a new government was formed under Petain, De Gaulle and "free france" were the traitors in that scenario, yet since the rebel group "free france" was on the side of the conquering Americans, somehow it all gets turned upside down and the "other France" was actually the traitors ?

It was only in 1944 that the Allies and Communists agreed on the dividing lines that they did.

The French Prime Minister resigned after the cabinet refused to join the Anglo-Franco union which Churchill proposed, then Petain was appointed Prime Minister and requested an armistice with Germany. All legal procedures, not dictated to by Germany.

The Netherlands had a booming economy during the German occupation and there was no famine then was there? Until the Allied mass bombing of Europe in 1943 onwards.
