  3.  @mikewlazlinski4309  A civil war is one fought in the same state, usually two sides fighting for control of the state. Such as the English civil war; parliamentarians vs royalists. The Confederates were not fighting for control of the Union, they were fighting for independence, hence it was a war of independence as you would title any successful war of independence as such. Only in failed attempts at independence would you blasphemously call the conflict a "civil war".
