from Lance-Corporal to Fuhrer and Reich Chancellor, that's one heck of a story. Imagine if some corporal Tommy told his mates in 1914 that he'd be King of England by 1935.

@NickB1967 "King and Prime Minister" to be exact

@torquetheprisoner the last straw for Britain.

@torquetheprisoner or rather had he somehow avoided the war like he wanted to and came to either an entente with britain or an agreement with Poland.

@SubZero-kb1ir I mean sure, there has been plenty of Austrians in high ranking German/ Prussian positions just like the most famous British heroes were Irish such as the Duke of Wellington

@krainzyrumie6426 except if you read a few books you would find he never even wanted to "take on" Britain, France or Poland, let alone "the world"

Yes imagine if Britain didn't give Poland a blank cheque imagine if Britain didn't declare war on Germany imagine if Poland returned to negotiations they abandoned after the British military guarantee imagine if Poland agreed to the generous deal Hitler offered numerous times from January to April 1939 imagine if Britain and France agreed to the 25 year peace pact Hitler offered in 1936 etc.

@ethericboy Yes and a homeless man becoming Chancellor was also unheard of.
1
@ethericboy Perhaps not commoners but I think it was more common for people who weren't related to the families to claim the throne and fight wars and then become King etc. I think i get your point but it would not be impossible for someone in an exceptional case to make themselves King through years of campaigning, politicking and opportunism in a similar fashion that Hitler became Fuhrer when President Hindenburg died.
1
@ethericboy yeah like a referendum on the monarchy

@kristopherryanwatson Churchill was born into a long line of aristocrats, so its not at all comparable. He got his commission in the military simply by being a Churchill.

@DawnOfTheDead991 Yeah, become PM, King/Queen dies and then merge the offices together as one. That's basically what AH did.
1
yeah i don't know why people laud him as "unbiased" when he is still biased with such biased language.

@innocentbystander3798 Yeah I guess its much easier to portray Britain as morally right for interfering in other people's business than it is to explain to complexities of geopolitics. Heavens above imagine if a mainstream "documentary" mentioned that Hitler offered to guarantee the Polish corridor through a Treaty of Friendship, perhaps people might view WW2 a bit differently to "Hitler hated Poles". As Simon Newman stated "the omission of the facts is understandable, for the implication is that Hitler's unique responsibility for WW2 is undermined"

@Virolaxion i'm sure most Americans do though
