  2. And the best part is had the British stayed out of it, there wouldn't have even been a German-Polish war. Germany was having negotiations with Poland on creating a Treaty of Friendship and here's what Chamberlain said to his cabinet the day before issuing a unilateral military guarantee to Poland, a country vital to creating the "eastern front" in a potential war with Germany: "The Prime Minister said that he was somewhat uneasy at the fact that our Ambassador in Warsaw could obtain no information as to the progress of the negotiations between Germany and Poland. One possible, but very distasteful, explanation of this was that Polish negotiators were, in fact, giving way to Germany." - Cabinet Meeting, 30th March.

  4.  @EdgarStyles1234  You only have to look at the 1931 Weimar attempt at a customs union with Austria to sympathise with the idea of having a military. Germany and Austria wanted to form a customs union, France said no and that was the end of it. Without an army, Germany could not pursue even a peaceful foreign policy.

  6.  @asasas9146  Plus the Germans didn't have the manpower to allocate the 100,000 men that the scientists requested. The German war machine instead diverted these men to other areas. The Allies on the other hand had the luxury of not fighting a major land war and being able to allocate 100k+ men to these projects.

  16.  @janys6502  its not simply my opinion thought, its the opinions of diplomats as documented in "documents on british foreign policy" and "documents on german foreign policy" and "documents on united states foreign policy". The recurring point made by diplomats is that polish attitude towards danzig became more aggressive and intransigent upon receiving the british guarantee.

The entire point of National Socialism was to improve the lives of Germans, not "to invade Poland". I might point out, since you highly likely don't know, that Hitler never intended on war with Poland, in fact he wanted them as allies against Commie Russia. Even up until April 1939 (and arguably late August though the Poles never responded) he was trying to make a deal with them.

  23. Anglo centric history likes to forget Russia's role prior to June 22 1941, given that Russia played a critical role in destroying Germany after Germany defeated Anglo-French forces in 1940.

As Chamberlain implied here, the opposite is true, it looked like Germany WASN'T going to invade. The British didn't fear Germany invading, they feared Poland would make an agreement with Germany.

The context is that Germany and Poland were in fact having discussions to come to an agreement over the issues outstanding between the two, Chamberlain got wind of these and issued the military guarantee. Deduct that from the previous quote.

  27. Its amazing how the fate of history came close in numerous regards. Peace offers close to being accepted, Hitler close to being killed at numerous times, Churchill also had numerous scrapes such as being hit by a taxi, on a ship attacked by a U-Boat and nearly flying over German flak guns in France.

  29. Except the Germans actually did work with Slav allies and other Conservative/ fascist / authautarian governments. Had Poland allied with Germany, this would have been no different to Germany's alliance with Finland, Romania, Croatia, Slovakia, Hungary etc.

No it started because Britain wanted to keep a disunited Europe, was fearful that if they didn't start the war in 1939 then they would never be able to because Germany would be too strong and influential and they wanted to retain the idea that Britain was a Great Power by launching a quick war against Germany. At the time they did this they thought the German economy would collapse within months of the war starting.

Most countries back then felt "superior" to others, especially africans, yet no serious academic would describe Churchill as a fascist despite his warmongering, seizure of power and racist views on the superiority of anglo-saxons.

  43.  @Treblaine  Pretty sure there's a lot of points where German victory could have achieved such as Dunkirk, Operation Crusader where Rommel ignore the report on British supply dump a few miles away. "Geoffrey Cox wrote that Sidi Rezegh was the "forgotten battle" of the Desert War. Crusader was "won by a hair’s breadth" by the Eighth Army but "had we lost it, we would have had to fight the battle of Alamein six months or a year earlier, without the decisive weapon of the Sherman tank" Or some quotes on the Atlantic Battle: "A Royal Navy report later concluded "The Germans never came so near to disrupting communications between the New World and the Old as in the first twenty days of March 1943" I mean if I had the effort to write a book on this I'm sure you could find countless quotes on how close WW2 actually was, pretty sure Glantz also says the Germans could have won in 1941, 1942 decided them not achieving total victory and 1943 decided how quickly they would lose it. Or I'm sure you'd dismiss these quotes as "allied propaganda" like some sort of Schrodinger's German war machine: A war machine that had no chance of winning but at the same time was invincible and unstoppable.

Instead of "look mate, I know you really want that toy, but it did belong to the other guy 20 years ago and its universally accepted as a German city" Chamberlain said, by implication "don't give it to them, if the other kid tries to get it back, we'll fight them with you (wink wink)". Alexander Cadogan in his diaries however, says the guarantee was only meant to help the negotiations with Germany, not totally cut them off (oops). So either maliciously or simply stupidly, the British intervention in German-Polish relations did lead to catastrophe, as we all know, but few know these finer details.

Did Britain raise any objections to Prussian settlement programs ? No.

  49. the problem is that the accepted history that is being "revised" is literally the victors story that went unquestioned from 1945-1960s and books written after that time, particularly using British primary sources becomes the "revisionist" history. Revisionism is a fundamental part of any academic study, it's absurd that somehow it should be a sin in Historiography.
