"Americans are terrible at math." This is true. The reason Americans are terrible at math is because we have terrible math teachers in middle school and high school. None of my middle school and high school math teachers seemed enthusiastic about teaching it and they either droned on or simply wrote problems on the board and told us to solve without explaining a thing. This was before high speed internet too. So no help from the web. We're also not encouraged to study it hard and are often told discouraging things like 'when are you ever gonna use it?' Just my 2 cents.

@mgaus When you see students that act like they don't care it's sometimes because their parents are bums too and don't know how to prioritize. Undervaluing school is a cultural problem in America but it's also a systemic problem too since public education is chronically underfunded and teachers are underpaid in America. We should look at what other countries are doing that we're not doing since we seem to be behind other developed nations when it comes to education. I agree with a lot of what you seem to be saying. Other countries fight for education but we seem to be fighting for our right to be stupid.
