With how unrealistic these job postings have gotten, the real best way to get a job in the industry is to already have one and get the attention of a recruiter or a head-hunter. I'm a data scientist. I became a data scientist after reading an article about how it was the "hot new career" and going to my very first boss and asking him if I could change my title. Me: "Do you care if I start calling myself a data scientist?" Him: "Do I have to pay you anything mkre?" Me: "Nope!" Him: "Go for it." Ten years and a job change (that I was recruited for) later and I'm a senior data scientist with ten years of experience. 🤷♂️

@thzzzt Well my company is pretty relaxed about work from home, so I can wear whatever I want. But no, as someone who mines and cleans data for a living, I'm usually wearing a hard hat with a flashlight and thick gloves.

@thzzzt I joined my company just in time for the Teradata collapse of 2016, and I still have nightmares about the Redshift catastrophe of 2018--there just weren't enough buckets to bail out everyone. At this point I'm just hoping to settle into a nice Snowflake-covered lakehouse.

@southpole76 The terms are too often used interchangeably but there's a very large difference between data science and machine learning engineering. A good employer will employ both.
